My favorite mat and props for my yoga practice

I'll start by mentioning that I don’t always use a mat for asana (physical practice of yoga) and you don't have to have a mat to practice. I’ve practiced using a towel, on the sand, on carpet or hardwood floors. Lately I've been including movement during my morning and bedtime routine so I'm practicing on my bed. Whichever surface I’m on I’m mindful to modify my posture to avoid slips or injury.

After trying different mats, I felt like I didn't have enough grip, so I looked for a mat that offered more support and traction. I wanted a minimalistic and easy-to-clean mat. I also wanted a brand with sustainable practices. After some research I found a cork mat from Scoria. The brand offers environmentally sustainable yoga equipment and I really love the products I've purchased. I’ve had the "Tree of Life cork yoga mat" for a while and it's beautiful and sturdy. I've received so many compliments on this mat. My palms and feet tend to get sweaty and I’ve found that this mat has a very supportive grip. It's also easy to clean and store.

As I deepened my physical practice of yoga I noticed that I had sensitive knees. I engage in many other forms of physical activity and as I practice ahimsa (a yoga principle that means non-harming) I am intentional about being kind to those sensitive areas in my body. I often use a blanket under my knees but it is difficult to adjust it during classes. During heated classes, I find that the blanket generates too much heat. This led me to purchase Scoria's cushion pads to support my knees, elbows and joints while practicing. I love that it's really easy to maneuver the cushion pads on the mat instead of using a blanket.

Since I love the cork mat and cushion pads from Scoria I also bought the crescent meditation cushion as a supportive prop for my practice. I often use this while guiding meditations on the Insight Timer App and it further grounds me in my seat. These products are all comfortable, durable, and have been an excellent addition to my yoga and meditation practice. I highly recommend their products to anyone looking for supportive props for their practice.

Remember that you can use towels, blankets and pillows or no props at all to deepen your yoga practice. The primary focus of the practice is your connection to your breath, body, and mind. Ultimately, props are there to support and enhance your experience, but they are not necessary for practicing. I plan to provide more blogs and videos on accessible items used as props.
