2023: A year of letting go
Larissa Ranglin | JAN 1, 2024

As the year draws to a close, sometimes we get caught up in the rush of setting goals for the upcoming year. However, I've realized that winter, for me, is more of a time for rest and reflection rather than planning. As I looked back on 2023, I embraced a powerful intention: to "let go."
I've noticed that holding tension in my body is a physical indication of my need for control in various aspects of my life. This constant striving for control has led to more distress. So, in 2023, I committed to letting go – releasing fears, self-doubt, and perfection. I worked on shedding the expectations of others and the labels that confined me, as well as the need to produce or consume.
This journey wasn't about eliminating these challenges entirely but rather about changing my relationship with them. My yoga practice deepened significantly over the year, focusing on releasing physical tension. I became more aware of my body, especially noticing when my neck or shoulders tensed up. In those moments, I would gently remind myself to "let go," allowing my body to relax into a state of gentle stillness.
This physical act of letting go mirrored a mental release, giving me a sense of clarity. Reflecting on this year-long practice, I feel a sense of relief. Despite the significant changes 2023 brought, I returned to my intention of letting go. I acknowledged the tension and unease these changes brought, taking moments to consciously relax my body – my shoulders, my eyebrows – and, in turn, my mind. This doesn't take away from my distress but rather supports me in flowing with the changes and the distress.
As I move forward, I carry with me the lessons of this year. Letting go isn't just a one-time act; it's a continuous process for me, a practice that requires patience and self-compassion. It's about understanding that my constant need for control can hinder me from living in the present.
By sharing my journey, I hope to inspire others to consider what "letting go" might look like for them. Whether it's releasing physical tension, or simply being more present in each moment. As we approach the new year, I encourage you to reflect on what this means to you.
