Setting a Sankalpa: Bringing Intention into Your Practice

In yoga, setting an intention can enhance the connection between the body and mind. The Sanskrit word for intention is sankalpa, which appears in traditional yoga texts from India. While it translates to "intention," sankalpa is more than just a goal—it’s a statement of purpose that can guide your practice.
Incorporating a sankalpa can help focus your energy and provide direction during your practice and daily routines. It serves as a reminder of what you hope to cultivate or achieve through your practice.
As we transition into fall here in North America, known as Vata season in Ayurveda, it's a time of change, with cooler weather and a sense of movement in the environment. Setting an intention during this season can help maintain a sense of balance and presence amidst these shifts.
Here are 2 sankalpas that may be helpful during this time:
These words can be repeated silently during asana (physical practice of yoga), pranayama (breathing exercises), or meditation, bringing awareness and acceptance to the changes around you.
While these are examples, it’s useful to personalize your Sankalpa based on your own needs and intentions. Whether your focus is on staying grounded, embracing change, or being more mindful, a sankalpa can act as a steadying influence during your practice.
A sankalpa is not about perfection, but about aligning with your personal intentions. As you set your Sankalpa, let it evolve with your practice, offering support and direction.
